I just returned from seeing the new take on the Karate Kid and I present to you The Karate Kid movie review. It was a pleasant surprise for the summer, because it was really good. Jaden Smith may be on track to becoming a really successful actor. You can't help but reminded of the first Karate Kid movie, but they did change up a few things with this version to keep it unique and interesting. The ending was inspiring and well done, it had good plot, and the characters were really enjoyable. There are spoilers below.
The plot of the movie begins with Troy, Jaden Smith's character, and his mother, played by Taraji P. Henson, moving to China because of a job opportunity. Troy has to try to adjust to the new environment of a completely different culture and learn a completely new language undoubtedly he is a fish out of water. Even when he tries to make friends he develops a crush on a girl that already has an admirer that knows kung fu. After being publically humiliated he begins to be trained by Jackie Chan, who plays the Mr. Miyagi character. Although you could probably guess the gist of the plot, there are lots of pleasant surprises including a few Chinese phrases.
You can't help but remember the original characters based off the new ones. Troy is simply an average kid that you can't help but like because of the situation is placed in. He wants to just be accepted, but he's constantly in fear from all the bullying he receives. Taraji P. Henson is an excellent mother, and she is constantly tell him to "pick up his jacket" but she always there for love and support. Jackie Chan does much more than comedy in this movie, he actually exposes his vulnerable side by crying. The characters were outstanding in this movie.
I won't give away the last move that Troy does in the end once he has entered the tournament, but just know it is great. This movie really showcases the bond between mother and child and the bond between master and student. The only thing that made me a little sad about the ending was the masters didn't fight, but I guess that was simply one of the changes they were going for.
This movie is really worth seeing. For girls there is love story and for boys there is kung fu tournament, so it really is a movie for the whole family. And trust me, the movie is worth watching even if it's just to see the tournament, those kids are amazing. There is an abundant of Chinese culture that Americans can really appreciate because it shows it to us in a completely unique way. This movie is a 5 out of 5, well that's it for The Karate Kid movie review.
