Finding the perfect painting contractor can be a difficult task. You are letting someone into your home to not only improve it, but give it a professional look. By hiring the wrong house painting contractor you can end up with a big mess on your hands, or possible worse scenarios. It is very important to do the basic background check on whoever you hire to make sure you get the best results.

To get started you need to know how long a contractor has been working in the area. Too often painting contractors will move from location to location trying to outrun a bad reputation and warranty work. Check their references for local jobs, and actually call the customers. A reputable house painting contractor will be able to provide some sort of proof for how long they have been in business and where they conduct said business. You want a contractor with a long history on the job and in your area.

You will then also need to find out if he has his own work crew or if he hires illegal's to work for him. If he hires illegal's chances are there are rushed jobs involved, and he is setting himself up for legal problems of his own, and your work may not be finished. It is best that he has a legal team helping him to paint that way there is satisfaction on everyone's part and no problems with a police bust in your home.

All good painting contractors are insured. You need to verify that he has liability and workers compensation for his employees. That way if anything happens while they are working on your home you are not held legally responsible and his insurance will cover it.

Determine if the house painting contractor will give you a written contract of all the work he will be performing. This will protect you if he decides to give you additional services you didn't agree upon because you can legally refuse to pay for them. This also lets you see a breakdown of his charges and will make sure you are both on the same page.

Communication is key in any relationship, especially a business one, and you will want a house painting contractor who will talk with you over concerns when they come up. Some contractors will not communicate or adjust for anything the homeowner desires and this is bad business. If you have objections to specific paints or the hours, the contractor keeps at your home they should be willing to adjust. Some latitude is to be expected after all you are hiring them to work for you; of course, this is something that needs to be addressed in the contract before the job begins.

If you like the feeling that you are getting from the painting contractor you need to move forward by asking him for references. He should provide them, and not just with people randomly calling you either. Ask for references that have actual contact information available. This will allow you to do a little digging into his past, and get honest feedback from his previous clients, and ask if they had any problems or concerns.

The house painting contractor should have some decent painting experience in his past. Outside of painting the walls in a single room ask him what size homes he has experience painting. Remember that large homes require better skills and even better equipment, understand this before you sign anything.

On the contract you will want a guarantee of his work. He should be willing to stand behind what he does and that you remain happy. If there isn't a minimum of 5 years on this, you shouldn't proceed further. Remember this is important to get in writing as well.

Finally, check and ensure the painting contractor is willing to meet your satisfaction before demanding payment. If there are areas that need touching up will he correct those before you pay? If not there will be problems down the road with the 5 year guarantee as well.

Finding a good painting contractor doesn't have to be hard. Just keep these simple tips in mind and do your research. You are certain to find one of the best contractors on the market if you are patient and use a little common sense.
