Your Tinted Windshield - Is It Legal Or Do You Need To Replace It?

There are a few different reasons that car owners may believe they need to add tint to their windshields - some of which are more valid than others. Some think that this will keep the air inside the vehicle cooler during the warmer months, while others just believe they simply look more stylish rolling down the highway with a tinted windshield - sort of like sunglasses for their prized ride. What really matters, though, is whether this option is legal in the state where you live (or that you are moving to), or whether you are going to have to get the whole windshield replaced.

Laws that regulate window tinting are administered by the DMV in any given state, so before you take your car to a tinting shop, you should research what is allowed in your state. Some states don't permit this modification at all (except in the case of medical need), and in the states that do allow it, there are maximum amounts of tint that are allowed. A good windshield repair company should be able to give you the lowdown as well.

Most newer cars and trucks come with some sort of window tinting already in place. In most cases, this is just to keep out some of the harsher UV rays, and is compliant with all federal and state regulations. The type of tinting that is often illegal or of concern is the after-market work done by custom shops, or in some cases, by owners themselves.

Before you begin tinting (or, as stated above, before you register your car in a new state), you will need to find out what the laws are regarding this modification. Usually you can find the regulations spelled out in the vehicle code on the state government website. Some laws will refer to "shade bands" that go across the top of the windshield, aftermarket heat-shrunk tinting sheets, and even temporary shades that are held up by suction cups (usually only placed on side or rear windows) and each state has different rules regarding these less methods.

Even in states where permanent tinting is permitted, it is usually only allowed on passenger or rear windows. Before you begin the tinting process or purchase a vehicle with aftermarket windshield modification, note that if you get busted with tinting that exceeds the amount or style allowed by law, you may have to get an entire auto windshield replacement.
