Moving Major Appliances To A New Home Requires Pre-Move Preparation

Whether moving down the street or cross country, many homeowners decide that keeping items such as refrigerators and washers and dryers makes sense. This is especially true with regard to Energy Star rated appliances, which are not only "green" and environmentally wise choices in your home, but are also expensive to replace. However, moving these fixtures is not like other furniture. Most professional movers require that home owners do some pre-preparation prior to loading these pieces onto a truck.

So, what should you be doing prior to the big day? The necessary procedure can usually be found in the product owner's manual. Some preparation may have be started a day or more in advance, so don't wait for the movers to arrive at your home to start the process. Your local movers will rarely accept this responsibility.

There are a few basic steps that, when followed, make this process relatively painless:

* Consult manuals to learn of any specific steps to take before moving. This most likely includes securing loose or removable parts, draining water and properly tending to connection points. Always secure electric cords with movers tape to prevent damage.

* Refrigerator: Unplug at least a day in advance; remove perishable items; clean and dry every surface to prevent mildew; disconnect ice maker water line and allow to fully drain; remove or secure all racks/drawers/baskets

* Oven Range: Clean inside and out; remove or secure racks; tape knobs and elements; take note of any special procedures for required for gas lines and connections.

* Washer and Dryer: Remove hoses; tape knobs; fill large internal cavities with soft, unbreakable things such as sheets and towels; secure washer drum.

* Dishwasher: Drain and empty completely, remove or secure racks, clean and dry on the inside

Doors, lids, power cords and any non-removable external appendage should be secured with durable packing tape. Gas appliances require special attention. In most cases, hiring a qualified technician to properly disconnect a gas appliance and cap the line is warranted.

Without the proper appliance preparation, a moving company may outright refuse to transport them. It is more likely that they will require a signed waiver that absolves them of any responsibility should the appliances get damaged or cause other damage in transit.

Taking the appropriate pre-move steps with regards to appliance transport goes a long way not only in terms of minimizing labor costs, but in ensuring they arrive at the destination clean and in proper working order.

This should go without saying, but before carting your refrigerator cross country, it might be a good idea to measure to make sure that it fits into the space it will occupy. Older homes were built to accommodate smaller appliances, and standard sizes have changed over the years.

Also, be sure to check with the company handling your move to find out if appliances will be hooked up for you at your new destination. Don't be surprised if the answer is NO. Incorrect hook up can cause damage, so few movers are willing to accept that responsibility.
