How To Choose A New Family Dentist

There are many reasons that you may find yourself in the market for a new dentist, and finding one that you are comfortable with and that you can trust with your family's needs is very important. Maybe you've moved recently, your old dentist has retired, you have changed jobs and insurance. Or maybe it's been so long since you've been to the dentist that you forgotten his name (if that's the reason, shame on you!).
Whatever the reason, here are a few tips that can make your search for a new dentist much more smooth and successful.

1. Start With Your Insurance. If indeed you have a dental plan, you should be provided with a list of dentists that your insurance will cover. From that list you can start to choose the specialties that you and your family will need. You can find someone who practices general dentistry, as well as a pediatric specialist, or if you are dealing with the fear factor, sedation dentistry might be for you. You might also give some thought to convenience of access - is your preference someone near your home or closer to work? Also, it's a great idea to ask a co-worker or friend who their dentist is or if they have any recommendations.

2. Do Some Research. Once you have a list of names, do a little checking into what these dentists' credentials are. Find information regarding their education and previous work as well as any patient testimonials. Often, this information is on their website and can be confirmed through a search online.

3. Ask Questions. Before you contact your potential new dentist, make a list of any questions you may have - ranging from his or her years of experience to what the normal office hours are. During your visit, or on the phone, interview your candidate. This is a great way to not only get nuts and bolts, but also to get a general feel for the person behind the mask.

4. Availability. This is really important, especially in case of emergency or if you need to re-schedule an appointment. Find out how long it usually takes between the call to arrange the visit and actually getting in to see that dentist. If availability on short notice is important to you, this is one factor you should definitely check out before you make a family commitment to any professional.

5. Waiting time. How long do you have to wait to see the dentist once you arrive at the office? Do they have any guarantees? What are their protocols when a patient (or the doctor) is running late? Remember that your time is valuable too.

6. Arrange a Visit. Comfort level is very important when it comes to visiting the dentist. Before you commit to a new one, see if you can visit his or her office just to get a feel for the place, and to meet the professionals there. Take your partner and kids too, as this should be a decision for the whole family. If you get a good vibe there as a group, you'll know that you may be on the right track.

Finding a dentist you are happy with may not be an easy process, but it is one of the more important things you can do for your own health and that of your family.
