Traveling toddlers get bored easily. What do you do when you are trapped on a plane with no toys? Try these fun activities that are sure to provide at least a few minutes of fun using everyday items that are easy to find on an airplane (or even in a restaurant).
- Cups: Request 2 cups from the flight attendant and fill one of them 1/2 full of ice or water. Have your toddler pour the water or ice from one cup to the other. They are sure to spill a little (or all of it!) but that is part of the fun. You can avoid the mess by using small snacks such as Cheerios or M&Ms instead of the water/ice.
- More Cups: Ask the flight attendant for three cups (coffee cups work well) and play the shell game. Small snacks, a pacifier or small toy work well as the hidden object.
- In-Flight Magazine Fun: Find the crossword puzzle and color the grid in a fun pattern or design. If your toddler is learning their letters, you can find an ad with lots of large letters and play letter seek games.
- Use subscription cards or napkins to make paper airplanes, hats, or boats.
- Teach Rock, Paper, Scissors: Be flexible with the rules and let your toddler entertain you with the reasons why one should win over the other.
- Make faces or play peek-a-boo. Practice making funny, sad, mad, and scary faces at each other.
- SkyMall Magazine: Play I Spy through the pages. Practice counting by having them flip the catalog and count the number of animals, dogs or cats. Animals work great for this because they are scattered throughout the magazine yet there aren't too many for a toddler to count.
When all else fails, never under-estimate the power of a sock puppet!
