What does it take to make a great teacher? Certainly, talent and adaptability play a role, but it is the passion for lifelong learning that takes an average educator and turns him or her into an exceptional mentor. Earning a degree in education is only one step in a lifetime of opportunities to learn new skills, technologies and developments in pedagogy. Educational theory evolves alongside cutting-edge technologies and dynamic teaching techniques. Great mentors know that they need new tools and must keep up-to-date with the most recent techniques in order to reach a new generation of students. Technology is ever-evolving, and teachers must be lifelong learners to keep up with the pace. Anyone in the education field should pursue ongoing training continually, even after they receive their teacher certification or degree.

Professional development is essential to an instructor's career. By continuing to improve themselves, they can keep on top of new trends in learning theory and gain valuable new tools. Classes are available at university campuses; in-service days at the schools and even at the district level are offered, and of course, there are a plethora of online courses available. Some programs even set up seminars at the schools and then follow up with practice sessions through the use of online tools.

Many schools offer ongoing training at every opportunity, such as when they adopt a new technology like Smart Boards, or when there is a change in staff. This gives everyone the opportunity to both learn new skills and to network. Through ongoing training, instructors can share information on curriculum, student achievement and best practices.

Though continuing education courses are often not free, the benefits far outweigh the costs. According to a recent study, student achievement increases 21 percent when their instructors attend at least 50 hours of professional development each year. Educators who are encouraged to collaborate gain invaluable resources and experience greater job satisfaction. By working together, new teachers have the opportunity to learn from veterans, and all benefit by sharing strategies.

In the past, the cost of ongoing professional development has largely been the responsibility of the individual, but as schools and organizations recognize the value, many are stepping up to cover the costs. There are also grants available, directly from schools, districts and even from corporations and nonprofits. By keeping up with the latest, educators can stay ahead of the curve and students can achieve greater success both in school and in life.
