Its no doubt that nursing is one of the most rewarding career fields there are. The pay is great, but the emotional rewards can be more gratifying sometimes.
A profession in medical surgical nursing can draw on many aspects of what it takes to be a nurse.
Medical surgical nursing can require additional on the training and education. Also there are certain other characteristics needed by the nurse to fully make the most of this specialization.
These include:
Endurance. The demands of medical surgical nursing can be strenuous. Especially during those times when things don't go as planned, which is most of the time in a hospital. Your patients are depending on you even when things are very busy and demanding of your time and attention.
The ability to handle stress. While not every shift may turn into a disaster, you never know when it will. This places a high amount of stress on those in medical surgical nursing. Sometimes you don't get a second chance to handle a situation right the first time.
Ability to follow orders. This is a big one. All nurses have to take and follow orders by physicians, but in the medical surgical nursing setting there is usually more face time with doctors. If you can learn to adapt to each physicians individual idiosyncrasies, you will do well.
Blood. Yes, you have to be able to work with and around blood in medical surgical nursing. Some nurses are just naturally queasy and cant deal with blood and the smells associated with it. But that's ok, that's why there are doctors offices for those to work in.
Willingness to take extra classes. Since medical surgical nursing is a specialty, there might be extra certifications involved, and extra course work, depending on the state in question. Since surgery techniques are always being improved, continuing education is a must for those entering medical surgical nursing.
Those who enjoy the day to day challenge of helping patients overcome their medical problems, medical surgical nursing can be a rewarding occupation.
