Competition Heats Up For The Top Spot In Power Sport Batteries

There is a kind of revolution starting in the world of power sport batteries. Not only are newer types such as AGM (absorbent glass mat), gel and lithium powered proving to be more cost-effective in the long run over the more traditional wet cell batteries, these newer technologies are providing amazing amounts of cranking power and reserve capacity. While there are a few standout brands in this great revolution, including MotoBatt, Odyssey, Adventure Power and Braille, it seems that right now, with the AGM technology, MotoBatt is currently leading the pack and Braille has a strangle hold on the lithium (racing battery) market.

The average power sport enthusiast cannot afford the steep price tag attached to lithium batteries nor do they require the huge payload they provide. Thus this technology appeals mainly to the racing scene as they require lightweight and powerful units. In comparison, the most appealing feature of the AGM battery is the price tag is similar to or slightly higher than conventional wet batteries.

Gel batteries are unique in that they suspend the electrolyte in gelatin form around the lead plates; however this feature requires them to accept a different charge profile. The average lead acid battery charger (or alternator) will overcharge gel batteries causing premature death. AGMs accept the same charge profile as wet batteries and are considered to be maintenance free-there is no need to add distilled water and the terminals will not corrode. On the whole, the AGM battery has quite a few distinct advantages over old-fashioned wet-cell and gelled ones. Thanks to the fiberglass mats that contain the electrolyte, AGMs are immune to spills and are more tolerant of freezing temperatures and the recombining of oxygen and hydrogen inside the unit means that virtually no water is lost over its lifetime. They lose their charge much less quickly than other types, and this is especially true of MotoBatt batteries. In fact, numerous tests performed by independent laboratories have demonstrated quite conclusively that this brand recovers better, lives longer and has better cranking times than competitors. And to make them stand out even more, they are one of the few manufacturers to offer a two-year warranty (Odyssey is the other brand), rather than the standard one-year warranty offered by most other brands.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the MotoBatt battery in particular beyond the incorporation of AGM technology is that there are specific models that are made to work in several different types of vehicles. By utilizing the unique QuadFlex terminal design and spacers systems, the user can actually take the power source out of his or her boat, and use it in, for instance, a personal watercraft (such as a jet ski) or a motorcycle. And not only that, you can use the same unit to power up different brands, makes and models of each. All told, MotoBatt's company literature claims that its 27 models can effectively replace 153 other models. In other words, depending on what kind you need, one single battery can be fitted and used in place of up to 25 others, regardless of variations in size and shape, with the use of the spacers. Talk about eco-responsible manufacturing; this is an amazing level of functionality that has been previously unheard of in the power sport battery world.

Indeed, if there is a revolution taking place, MotoBatt is leading the charge.
