f there is, one thing that painting contractors know without a shadow of a doubt it is that mistakes will happen. Paint dribbles off the roller or brush or you get over spray from the rollers. These mistakes are best dealt with by being properly prepared for them in the first place. You need a drop cloth that is large enough to cover nearly any floor area. Most painting contractors opt for a canvas type cloth due to durability and usability.
Canvas drop cloths versus plastic
One experience with spilled paint on a plastic drop cloth will probably convince you of the wisdom in using canvas material. When plastic drop cloth meets paint, the result is a mess. You will be spreading your mistake all over the place. Many people simply have to use plastic drop cloths because they are so inexpensive, if this is, you just are confident that you have it taped down tight.
Use tape to your advantage
Cutting in with a brush is not always done with the steadiest hand and paint rollers seem to always paint areas they should not. In order to do a quality job with as few painting mishaps as possible you should tape the room first. Use tape around windows, ceilings and edges to get a professional looking job easier.
Remove locks and face plates
Before you begin application, go through the room looking for potential problems. Face plates should be removed, or they will end up fashioned the same color as your wall. The same goes with light fixtures, or even door handles. Furniture should be covered or removed (as should kids and pets, unless they are of course' helpers'). Stand back and take stock of the room to see if it is ready for painting.
Paint footprints
If you have a spill or paint drops, you need to clean it up immediately. Otherwise, you will quickly have a marked trail through your home. Tracking paint is a contractor's nightmare, so they take steps to prevent it. This one piece of advice will save you time and flooring.
Do not leave paint that missed the drop cloth
When the paint hits the floor or carpet...immediately use a wet sponge to blot the spot. Paint that has a solvent thinner base requires thinner. Use an old rag and thinner to gently blot the paint. If the paint has a chance to dry before you can clean it up, it will require a product called "Goof off", a clean white cloth and some elbow grease on bare floors to dissolve and remove the paint. On carpet, it will be more difficult depending on the kind of carpet and type of paint used. It is in your best interest to attack that splotch as soon as it hits the floor.
Latex paint will clean up much more efficiently than oil-based paints. You will want to invest in a sharp razor blade scraper to aid you in removing paint from edges and windows. To be rid of paint spots on wood you can use a combination of scraper, a clean cloth and Goof Off. Just cover the scraper with a clean cloth and going over the area gently. Do not forget to get a handy painters hat, only the most professional contractors are wearing them.
